A 10-MINUTE video recording a Chinese city’s COVID-19 prevention and control measures went viral recently on Chinese social media and Yahoo! Japan.

The video featuring everyday life under the prevention and control measures in Nanjing (the capital city of China’s Jiangsu Province) made by Japanese documentary director Takeuchi Ryo was watched over 8 million times and received 136,000 likes as of 2:30 p.m. on March 5 on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media platform, and lingered on the first page of Yahoo! Japan.
In the video, Takeuchi, a Nanjing resident who has lived in the city with his family for seven years, showcased through his personal experience how the city has maintained “zero new infections.” He showed viewers how local residents follow the detailed anti-epidemic measures in self-protection, self-isolation, information registration, work resumption, daily transportation, home study, dining in and more.

After returning from Japan three weeks ago, Takeuchi followed the 14-day home-quarantine regulation. Like many returnees, he said following such strict rules was unpleasant at first but in time accepted that they are effective as the number of newly infected people grinded to a halt in Nanjing. Virus infections are currently increasing outside of China.

“I kept informed on the situation outside and was very concerned about what was happening in Japan, where outbreaks are serious,” said Takeuchi. “I noticed that the Japanese government didn’t react as expected to combat the virus, which has disappointed many of us. Also, many Japanese residents didn’t take the contagion seriously.”
“I worry about Japan while witnessing how Nanjing and other Chinese cities drive the virus away. To call people’s attention to the epidemic in Japan, eliminate the bias by Japanese people against China and show the world what the real situation in China is like, I decided to make the video and upload it for the public to see,” he said.

“As there have been no new infections in Nanjing for more than 14 consecutive days, I literally feel much safer here than I would in Japan,” he said. “People know that the death rate is about 2 percent, but they don’t understand that it is only due to the effort of many medical workers in Wuhan [that the death rate is that low]. They underestimate the virus.”
Takeuchi said he was invited for an interview by three mainstream Japanese TV stations (Fuji Television Network, TV Asahi and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television) in one day on March 4. Viewers were amazed by how China faced the virus.

“They (Japanese viewers) didn’t realize how strictly and thoroughly China has prevented and controlled the contagion until they watched my video,” he said. “Now they have more confidence on China’s future development because the government and people here have the ability to contain such a fierce virus.”
He said many Japanese netizens also expressed their envy of Chinese people, who now can take a sigh of relief.
Takeuchi is based in Nanjing, producing documentaries as a bridge between Chinese and Japanese people. His work “The Reason Why I Live Here” has gained him recognition. He has a fan base of 1.79 million followers on Weibo.
